Neilson came home from the Dauphiné sick on Sunday afternoon and we as a family have been taking it pretty easy since then. Because our time together in the summer is limited, I often set aside my personal expectations for the day/week and try to prioritize time as a family, and seeing friends who we haven’t seen since the beginning of May.
The sun is out and the temps aren’t too high. But it’s sunny and warm enough to crave a dip in the sea every day.
this week
Monday, I went to the beach with friends and we laid in the sun until it was so warm we needed to jump in. It was so refreshing to float in the salt water. We passed around Charlotte, had iced coffees in thermoses and strawberries from a tin. Following our afternoon in the sun, we headed indoors for Chinese takeout.
Tuesday, Neilson and I tried out a Korean fried chicken spot for lunch. Not the most kid friendly, but Charlotte loved playing with the plastic gloves they provided. In the afternoon, I went to the antique store with my friend and helped him find some retro director style chairs. We christened them on his balcony with orange wine from our favorite natural wine cave.
Yesterday, Neilson and I took a bike ride down the promenade together and I provided him some very slow company to prevent him from pushing too hard. We went to lunch together and I indulged in my new summertime favorite-iced matcha.
Last night we went to the Asian grocery and grabbed all the ingredients for my favorite Korean dish to make for friends-kimchi bokkeum. A stir fried dish of kimchi and pork (adapted for our pescatarian friend last night) served with lightly fried tofu.
If you can’t tell from our week, Neilson and I love eating Asian food. Especially after he’s been at a race he craves some spice, and I’ll never say no to an excuse for white rice and kim(dried seaweed sheets).
We’ve also realized in this season of life that going out to eat for a date night is hard without a lot of forethought. Our best bet for quality time together is on a Wednesday, when our nounou watches Charlotte, or a weekday lunch with Charlotte.
watching
We’ve been watching season 2 of the Netflix Tour de France series, and it is honestly some great dramatic television. Although we were filmed last year before and during the Tour, we didn’t make the cut this season. Probably because they kept asking Neilson if he could have a more cocky personality. Which if you know Neilson is….not his vibe.
nice guide
Keeping it brief on this front because in my other tab, I am working on something very taxing for you all! A comprehensive guide to Nice with all my favorite spots. And it’s not even going to fit in one email.
As usual when I assign myself too “herculean” of a task, I become overwhelmed and have to separate myself from it. So, I’m taking my time and going through photos from every year we’ve lived here to use. So bear with me, but it is coming.

I'll be in Nice this summer specifically to cycle but really looking forward to your local guide - love to know your favorite flea markets and vintage shops! Just binged through Netflix season two the past two days, sad didn't get to see Neilson but glad he stayed true to himself. This season was definitely a little more dramatics with "reality tv" kind of cut haha
So excited for a Nice guide. I’ll be there with my husband for 4 nights in September.
We are on episode 4 of unchained. Bummer that he won’t be highlighted. Did get to see him a little on the one breakaway.
