maximalist in 2025?
This past weekend, my mom, sister and I stayed in the Austin Proper for a good ole, rainy girls weekend. We did some shopping, got double piercings, sipped coffee, and had a lot of tacos as one does in Austin.
This is the third Proper hotel I’ve stayed in, and I love seeing Kelly Wearstler piece together luxurious accommodations in all kinds of locations. Her mix of roundtop antiques with paintings and contemporary textiles. Not to mention the light fixtures. they make all the difference.
I’ve also been shooting more interiors, since the nature of being home in Houston is less time spent in public places, and more time spent in homes. This differs from Europe, where the heart of a community is usually in parks or cafes. Purely due to limitations and people having smaller homes that are less conducive to hosting.
I’ve been pinning and painting and scheming over making changes to our spot here to cozy it up for the few months/year that we are here. As well as dreaming about how I’ll jhush up our home in Nice when we return. I have an exciting shipment to unpack from my grandparents’ apartment in London, and fresh eyes with ideas.
The main details I’ve noticed from spending time in other spaces and pinned collections of cozy spaces:
duality-using repetition to create larger moments in a space
soothing, large scale paintings contrasting with areas of small frames close together
sculptural branches, plants
evocative light fixtures
using throws, pillows and textiles to change the feeling of a space
keeping the bones simple and jhushing through seasonal foliage and colors
