Wednesday’s. Quelle luxury. On Wednesday’s our nanny arrives shortly after Charlotte has woken up and I often slip back under the covers with a fresh cup of coffee and dig deeply into my quiet time and writing while listening to them play.
For anyone with small children you know that they often don’t get the memo that Saturday is a day for snoozing late or lounging. So Wednesdays are my Saturday. And I’ll take it.
Our family has had a rough go of it with sicknesses these past few weeks. We seem to be in a neverending cycle of passing things around to each other. To the point that it’s hard to pinpoint who was the start of any of the illnesses. That being said, I have had low energy. And the desire to stay curled up inside under blankets watching gilmore girls, sipping tea. and eating soups. We’ve been having every type of soup under the sun.
This past weekend, Neilson and I, exhausted on a Friday night, drug ourselves into the pouring rain for a date night I had planned long before predicting our energy levels. We huddled together under an umbrella and landed at a wine bar not too far from our house. We tucked into arancini and orange wine and finished the evening off with a mont d’or served with cornichons, crusty bread and charcuterie. Mont d’or is a type of soft raw cow’s milk cheese bought in a round wooden container. The way they serve it in the winter is baking it in it’s original container and serving it warm and gooey, with things to dip in it. Trust me it’s decadent and well worth it.
Saturday, with a cranky baby we took a walk up to the park and made it only far enough to call it a walk. Later that afternoon, we attended a 2 year olds birthday party at my fellow Texan friend’s house and she served homemade salsa and spinach artichoke dip. Iykyk.
Sunday, we spent a slow morning at home watching church in bed before meeting some friends for brunch. 2 babies, 3 adults and the world’s tiniest table makes for an interesting brunch spread. At one point we were begging them to take dishes off the table, and out of the reach of little hands. That afternoon, we celebrated chandeleur with friends. On the 2nd of february, it’s important to consume inordinate amounts of crêpes to usher in a bountiful harvest. So that we did. I chose to cover mine in nutella or vanilla chestnut spread. I made this boursin and caramelized leek dip to bring with ruffled chips and assorted crudité. Easy to throw together in 20 minutes and the perfect dip to bring when they say, “don’t bring anything but yourselves”. And sometimes a salty respite on an afternoon of sweets can hit home.
That evening, we ordered mapo tofu and garlicky green beans to eat with leftover peking duck and I was a happy girl. There’s nothing as good as spice on a sore throat.
Monday, after dragging Charlotte to school, I spent time at home doing the typical post weekend roundup. Putting toys back into their places, vacuuming and doing lots and lots of laundry. I made chocolate chip banana bread for goûter and for dinner we had miso pork ramen alongside bone marrow. Sounds fancy, but they had bone marrow in the carrefour downstairs so I bought it to try. We roasted it with salt and pepper and boy, was it delicious. And full of health benefits for our ailing bodies. Afterwards I boiled the bones to make beef broth for our french onion soup.
Yesterday, I took a long walk with a friend in the afternoon which ended with a very quick, very brisk dip into the sea. I took a long bath afterwards and ended the evening with this sun dried tomato lentil soup Neilson had whipped up. We were in bed as soon as Charlotte went down for the night.
